The beginning of our project

We (Tara and Kelly) are the authors of this blog and are Masters students at the Frank Batten School of Public Policy at the University of Virginia. We both also have our roots from Michigan! Tara is a graduate from Michigan State and a former resident of the UP. Kelly has a long line of family from Grosse Pointe, and both her parents hailed from Michigan State. Go Spartans!

In light of a recent fervor to revive Detroit and the current movement of young people back to the city-- we have decided to explore the history of change and urban renewal in Detroit. We will be creating interactive maps using census tract data to show these changes and we will include narratives to add a historical context to the data. We will include multimedia, pictures, maps, a historical timeline to tell the story of a constantly changing Detroit. We will hyperlink many historic figures, movements, studies, and policies. Although we may link to wikipedia pages for further reading, we only used published sources for our research. But-- we do think the wikipedia pages can give you some good background knowledge.

We hope to conclude our analysis by bringing your attention back to the present. What did we learn from our historical analysis of Detroit? And what does that mean for its future?

Thank you for taking the time to check out our blog. We hope you enjoy as we explore how Detroit can "RESTORE THE ROAR!"
